Today we're sharing the fourth of twenty-two paintings (all of them views of The Bronx) by Bronx artist Daniel
Hauben for the new Robert A. M. Stern Library on the Bronx Community College campus. The panel is
titled "Ho Kim Fruits" (below) and is a painting of a store located below the 174th St Station on the 2/5 train.
"Ho Kim Fruit and Vegetable Store was located below the 174th Street Station of the 2/5 line (in The Bronx), at the juncture of Southern Boulevard, Boston Road, and 174th Street.
This view has all the ingredients I look for in a Bronx street scene: the heavy geometry of the elevated train overhead and receeding off to the distance, counterbalanced by the organic
elements of the fruit and plant display and the seated figure in the foreground. Together, the impression conveyed is opressive yet somehow inviting as well."
As always, Hauben painted the scene several times before completing the panel you see above. Check out these earlier versions of "Ho Kim Fruits."
As always, thanks for sharing Daniel. We love how you capture The Bronx!
